Description
This cutting board is 16 and 1/8″ wide by 16 and 1/4″ long by 3/4″ deep.
I began with a black walnut tree and a cherry tree that were salvaged not far from my house. I brought them home on a trailer pulled behind my Tacoma and cut them into slabs of various sizes on a Woodmizer LX 50 in our backyard. I kiln-dried the lumber after it was cut, in a Nyles wood kiln, also in the backyard.
I cut the face-grain strips you see and glued them together. I cut a square out of the center of the strips, turned it 90 degrees, and glued it back together. I then added a Black Walnut border. Finally, I finished the board with Walrus Oil cutting board oil and a coat of wax.
There is no juice groove, and there are no handles. All edges are sanded and rounded over, so they are easy to grab and pick up from any direction.
The result is a beautiful design in a functional, tough board made from two local hardwoods found in WNC.
This board is large – approximately 16 inches square – and lightweight, making it a go-to in the kitchen.
