Description

This reversible Black Walnut end grain cutting board is 14 and 1/2″ long by 14 and 1/8″ wide by 1 and 7/8″ thick.

This end-grain cutting board began with a locally sourced black walnut tree that was knocked down by Hurricane Helene in my neighborhood. After paying a “finder’s fee” to the person who located it for me, I brought home the logs from the tree on a trailer and cut slabs from it with an LX50 Woodmizer in my backyard. The slabs were then kiln-dried, planed, cut into strips, glued-up, cut into more strips that were flipped so the end grain was on top and bottom, and glued-up again.

It is reversible – top and bottom have a juice groove, and all four sides have inset handles. The corners and edges are sanded down and rounded over, and the inside edges of the juice grooves have been carefully sanded down so there is a gentle slope from the center to the groove.

It was finished with Walrus Oil cutting board oil and wax.

It is among the first cutting boards I made. It has some minor defects, like “dents” from oversanding, visible glue lines, and some “wander” on the juice groove and handles from where I cut them “freehand” with a router. None of them affects the board’s functionality, and all are visible in the photographs. The price has been adjusted accordingly.
